Fleck Shutting Down August 16

As you've probably heard and seen by this point, Fleck has entered its sunset period. It's been a wild and crazy ride and depending on how long you've been with us for Fleck's quirky brand of fun, this may be totally shocking news or you might have seen the signs coming whether through hearing helava talk candidly about Fleck's "inside baseball" or perhaps you're one of the few who've noticed how much work was being put into the tutorial and the new user experience and the sometimes subtle sometimes dramatic shifts that have taken place there.

I've only been on the team for a short period of Fleck's life, but Fleck has been a part of my life in various forms since the first day I logged in back in January of 2011. Since that day, I've made …

Fleck Player Moderators

There have been a few questions floating around since the public player moderators update on Thursday that I'd like to take a moment to address.

  • 1 Why have player moderators?
  • 2 What can player moderators do?
  • 3 What if there aren't any Admins OR Player Moderators online?
  • 4 What are the rules?
  • 5 What happens if I break the rules? (Please don't!)
  • 6 I got a chat ban I didn't deserve! What can I do?
  • 7 Player Moderator X doesn't like me, should I worry?
  • 8 So are Player Moderators spying on me?
  • 9 When/Why are chat logs reviewed?

Self Aware staff can't be present at all times. Ideally, chat should never need moderating, but in cases where it gets out of hand, having someone available to take action can help alleviate problems.

Player mods have the ability to temporari…

This post is complete. Part II, with hopefully better results (read: less Orchids), can be seen here.

You may have heard there are two new trophies in fleck. One of which is only attainable in Level 5 Rare ZPs. I fully expect to never obtain it, but I'll give it a good go anyway, so here's the resulting level 5 runs with five players using horseshoes.

Lucky Horseshoe - Large Group (revisited)

Update today.

Change to combat loot calculation: Battling with multiple people no longer reduces your odds of finding epic and rare seeds. Previously, the odds of finding rare seeds were divided by the number of players participating in the battle; this modifier is being taken out, so you have the same chances of getting great seeds no matter how many people are participating. This also makes the Lucky Horseshoe item much more useful – previously, having multiple people in a combat using the Horseshoe did improve your odds, but now they will be substantially better if multiple people use the powerup.

So, clearly it's time to redo group Lucky Horseshoe. Basil was hosting.

Lucky Horseshoe

Tried out the Lucky Horseshoe to see how well it worked. Here's the breakdown.

  • 1 Notes
  • 2 First 30 Minutes
  • 3 Total time on Horseshoe
  • 4 Final Thoughts

I set a timer to let me know when 30 minutes was about to expire so I would be able to switch to Level 1s and get as many squeezed in at the end as possible, however when 30 minutes elapsed, I still had the flames indicating the active powerup. In fact, I had the flames for almost another 30 minutes (for a total of an hour). This seems to have been a lucky one time glitch, and as such I've split my results into two categories, what I was able to do in the first 30 minutes after activating the Lucky Horseshoe and what I got overall.

Also worth mentioning, this is not a feasible sample size for most users…

Chronicles of a Zombie Fort – Part 3: Trees

The first tree module planted was based on CountessVamp's . Primary modifications were using Ornamental Maples for the entire diagonal as well as using the handful of Blue Spruces I had collected for the triangles above and below the center. While I would have loved to do the entire module out of trees that take 4 days to mature, the gem costs involved were too prohibitive.

Turrets are still placeholders, based on the first module however, I don't anticipate any visibility problems.

So far, fighting in the circular modules works great, I've had some intentional and unintentional tests and even unexperienced zombie hunters can do well with the assistance provided. I'm planning on planting at least two more modules to fill out a diamond patter…

Zombie Loot Post Turrets

Major change ups, wanted to save the old data, so there's a new spreadsheet log. Already have more data (mostly weighted toward level 1 weeds however).

Take a look

Note: as of this point in time, individual stats pages for specific levels haven't been updated for new loot drops (super mag, booster shots, zombgone, and waterbomb). Will be fixed eventually.

If you would like access to the spreadsheet (for use of the dynamic stats filtering capabilities), leave a comment.

Chronicles of a Zombie Fort – Part 2: Design

After finishing up the unsuccessful test to find out the specific dimensions of a Waterbomb and discovering what sort of workable space I had to use and still be within the coverage of a Waterbomb, it was time to hit Lite Brite.

I mentioned I was working on something to CountessVamp and she also took the time to come up with some great templates as well, which you can see below. I only took time to mock up one design. I decided the differences between flowers and trees would probably require at least two different module templates, so I started working on a flower module design.

I used the core concepts of Basil's as a kind of guide. Adjusted the base hex components to try and fit them as cleanly as possible within the Waterbomb circle as w…

Chronicles of a Zombie Fort – Part 1

I've been toying around with the idea of starting from scratch, or something close to it. Mostly this has been centered around the recent shift in game mechanics to bring combat more to the forefront.

The idea is I can scrap a bunch of what I currently maintain and replace it with something much better designed and hopefully more effective and efficient and at the same time be able to better incorporate some of the new combat features like spaces for zombie pots and, of course, turrets.

I've had some successful tests recently with lower level planted tombstones and large tulip fields, so I'd like to be able to integrate some of that concept into a new turret and tree infused fortress.

Here's the feature wish list I have in the back of my head…

Buried treasure funkiness

Haven't been on much, but logged in today to find this in my yard.

Screencast:Animated X?

Not sure what's going on, but it seems to be an issue specific to me as others see the X normally. Issue was not fixed on a refresh.

Zombie Loot - Part 1 of ? - Day 1 ...again

Well turns out my first big push toward a zombie loot table couldn't have been more poorly timed. Those 250ish tombstones were dug the day before the USD:Gem ratio update, which brought with it adjusted drop tables, among other things.

I regrouped and worked out a system that was slightly more reliable and easy to use than my previous hunting setup (that included an iPod and a counting app). Now I copy the zombie hunt message then activate a custom Mac OSX service/script to run the win message through a script to grab all the relevant pieces of data (drop, coins, tomb level, etc) and log them to a csv file for easy spreadsheet importing. Not only is it super easy and much more reliable, but it also means I get to collect a bit more data tha…

Zombie Loot Table Day 1

I've started what will inevitably be the death of me and decided to make an attempt at a Loot Table for zombie hunts, starting with level 1 tombs. Here's today's progress.

I'm not sure what my target is... In the back of my mind I've always been thinking I'd probably need >1000 tombs worth of data to have anything even roughly significant due to some of the small drop rates. For now let's pretend like I'm aiming for 1000 tombs, for level 1 at least...

Today's count was 251 Level 1 tombstones dug up. Many thanks to CountessVamp for being willing to be a grave spotter.

As I've never gotten acknowledgement whether the number of players participating affects the drop rates at all, all of these tombs were completed solo.

Top Wettest Cities in US

I've toyed with the idea of picking up my plants and moving to get the greatest benefit from rainwater. While no data on rainfall will likely be perfectly suited for transferring to optimum fleck assistance, I figured I'd share the most useful info I have found yet given that a few people have asked me about this particular topic.

This info is pulled from a study, the results of which can be found here.

The gist of it is the following 11 cities get the most rainfall in the US (sorted here by the average number of days each year it rains in these cities).

  1. Olympia, WA–63 days
  2. Mobile, AL–59 days
  3. New Orleans, LA–59 days
  4. West Palm Beach, FL–58 days
  5. Miami, FL–57 days
  6. Pensacola, FL–56 days
  7. Baton Rouge, LA–56 days
  8. Tallahassee, FL–56 days
  9. Lafayette, LA–55 day…

De-leveling Exploit

With the introduction of the 5-minute return window for decor, an interesting possibility was introduced, de-leveling. By planting decor to put your experience over the top for a level then immediately returning that decor, you can, in fact, level up once and then return to the level you were at before you planted the decor because all experience gained is revoked and you get pushed back across the leveling requirement.

Basil used this along with the fact that the spring Peeper decor could be planted for 25xp each to reveal a clever exploit that works in concert with the fact that leveling up resets your health and stamina. The basics of the exploit can be seen in this screen video.

The above video demonstrates the basic principle. And here …

Distance Based Walk Speed

Today we got an update with walk speed that was based on the distance you were trying to travel instead of your zoom level when the action is executed. It got rolled back out pretty quickly and here's one of the reasons why.

Day One Walk Speed Jitters

The gist of the glitch/exploit is that whatever speed you happened to be traveling at before a tombstone was dug up was the speed at which you would travel for the duration of the fight. You could accomplish this by walking to the point where a tomb was just barely clickable and then dig from there without walking closer first or you could just travel a long distance before visiting a broadcast link to join up with someone else who is going to dig a tombstone.

The super speed was actually almost…

Hi!

After finally getting back onto Fleck this afternoon (mars in chat: "Heh. We were trying to track down an issue logging in on the ipad for a while before we realized it was a problem on the server for everybody!") I found this "watermarked" into the dying daisies on the east side of the Livermore Lawrence lab.

Hello to you, too! Thanks everyone for the water at Mount Diablo. And thanks for the signpost like! (Are these logged in the "While you were out" window. If so, sorry I missed it.)

Lawrence Livermore was the site of a .)
